Born Again or Merely Around the Church? A Warning to the Professing Believer

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.”
—1 John 2:19 (KJV)

In a time where spiritual deconstruction and religious "detoxing" are widely promoted, it has become common to hear people say things like, “I used to be a Christian” or “I grew up in church, but I don’t believe in that anymore.”

But Scripture is clear—you cannot un-be born again.

True Conversion Is Permanent

Salvation is not an emotional experience. It is not merely a change in external behavior. It is a supernatural work of God, in which a spiritually dead person is made alive by the power of the Holy Spirit.

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
—John 3:3 (KJV)

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
—John 10:28 (KJV)

A person who has been regenerated—that is, made into a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)—cannot return to their old life as though nothing happened. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in that person. He convicts, corrects, disciplines, and sanctifies.

This is not to say that a believer will never stumble or backslide. But even in rebellion, the true child of God is drawn back, grieved by sin, and ultimately preserved by the Shepherd of their soul.

Why Do People Leave the Faith?

Because they never belonged to Christ in the first place.

This is not a harsh judgment. This is biblical clarity. Many people have had a cultural experience with church. Many have been emotionally stirred by altar calls, cried at youth camps, or recited the sinner’s prayer—but have never been born from above.

“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”
—Matthew 15:8 (KJV)

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
—Matthew 7:21 (KJV)

When the cost of discipleship becomes real, when culture pressures people to compromise, when temptation arises—those who were never truly His will fall away.

You Must Be Born Again

Today, many people have a false assurance of salvation based on a childhood memory or a denominational label. But the question is not, “Did you once believe?” The question is, “Are you walking with Christ today?”

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
—2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV)

Salvation is not measured by how emotional you were during worship. It is not based on whether your parents were Christians. The evidence of salvation is the indwelling Spirit, producing the fruit of repentance, holiness, and perseverance.

A Gospel Call for the Lost and Religious Alike

If you find yourself questioning your walk—or if you’ve drifted so far that you wonder whether you were ever truly saved—today is the day to stop pretending and start surrendering.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, lived the life you could not live and died the death you deserved. On the cross, He bore the wrath of God for your sin. He rose again, proving His power over sin and death.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
—Romans 10:9 (KJV)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
—Romans 10:13 (KJV)

This is the invitation: repent, believe, and follow Christ. Not with words only, but with your whole life.

To the True Sheep—Stand Firm

If you belong to Christ, you are sealed.

“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his...”
—2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV)

Let no one deceive you with vain philosophies or modern lies that suggest true believers can abandon the faith. Christ keeps His own.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
—Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
