Don’t Take Anything With You: Trusting God in the Wilderness of New Beginnings

“And He called unto Him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two... and commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey.”
—Mark 6:7–8 (KJV)

Have you ever wondered why, when God calls you into something new, He often asks you to leave everything behind? Why does He strip you of the familiar? Why must the next step of your life feel like a wilderness walk with empty hands?

It is because faith does not grow in the comfort of yesterday’s provision. It grows when we are forced to depend on His daily bread.

The God Who Commands the Empty Hand

From Genesis to Revelation, God repeatedly calls His people into uncharted territory—with nothing but a promise.

  • When Abraham was called, he was told: “Get thee out of thy country... unto a land that I will shew thee” (Genesis 12:1). No map. No security. Just trust.

  • When the Israelites fled Egypt, they were commanded to leave with haste, taking no leaven—symbolic of leaving behind their old life and trusting the Lord for a new one (Exodus 12:34).

  • When Jesus sent out His disciples, He said: “Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece” (Luke 9:3).

This is not just a historical pattern—it is a prophetic principle. The Lord strips the old to make room for the new.

Manna from Heaven: Trusting God for Daily Bread

In Exodus 16, God gave the Israelites manna—but only for one day at a time.

“Gather of it every man according to his eating... let no man leave of it till the morning” (Exodus 16:16–19).

Why? Because God was training them to trust Him daily.

Just like then, many today are being spiritually conditioned to let go of yesterday’s comfort—whether it be old systems, old mindsets, or even old ministries. This is not punishment. This is divine pruning.

A Modern Application: Spiritual Minimalism in a Digital Age

In today’s context, letting go may not mean walking into the wilderness barefoot, but it may mean releasing years of personal achievement, digital footprints, or even ministry content you once cherished.

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing” (Isaiah 43:18–19).

We often carry the weight of what was, into the place of what is to come. But God will not allow yesterday’s manna to mold the future He’s preparing.

Prophetic Insight: The Stripping Before the Shift

In these last days, the Lord is preparing His remnant to walk in greater clarity, purity, and power—but it requires obedience.

Many are being pruned. Ministries are being refined. Platforms are being restructured. Lives are being reoriented.

“Every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit” (John 15:2).

Before God pours out latter-rain blessing, He calls His people to remove former crutches. The shaking is divine. The stripping is prophetic. The silence in the wilderness is strategic.

A Call to Repentance

Has God asked you to lay something down? Are you still holding on to the manna of yesterday? Have you hesitated to take the next step because it feels uncertain?

Repent. Release it. Trust Him.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
—Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

The Gospel Invitation

To the unbeliever or seeker reading this, understand: the ultimate call to leave everything behind is the call of salvation.

Jesus said, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Mark 8:34). This is not metaphorical—this is eternal.

If you want to follow Christ:

  1. Acknowledge your sin“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

  2. Understand the penalty“The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

  3. Believe in Jesus“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

  4. Confess and receive“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus... thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Let go of the world. Pick up the cross. Walk into life eternal.

Final Word: You Can’t Take Egypt with You into the Promised Land

When God calls you forward, don’t drag yesterday’s idols, comforts, or methods with you.

Leave the old behind. Trust Him for the new. He is faithful to provide.

“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
—Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
