The Childlike Heart: Rediscovering Purity, Trust, and Entrance into the Kingdom
“Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children,
ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
—Matthew 18:3 (KJV)
A Direct Warning From Jesus
This isn’t a suggestion. It’s not metaphorical. It’s a condition of entrance.
Jesus, the King of Glory, gives us a sharp and sobering truth: unless we are converted and become as little children, we will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. That word “never” is not open to interpretation. It’s a divine warning, one that demands attention.
In an age of intellectual pride, emotional numbness, and worldly ambition, Jesus calls us to humble ourselves, not to ascend further in our self-reliance but to descend into surrender.
The Purity of a Child
From a neurological and behavioral perspective, children between the ages of one and three live in a Theta brainwave state—a subconscious realm where they absorb the world around them without filters, ego, or judgment. This parallels how God created the human heart to first experience the world: with trust, vulnerability, and openness.
Children forgive quickly. They do not overanalyze. They do not harbor grudges. They are dependent, joyful, curious, and expectant. These are not qualities the world celebrates. But they are qualities heaven requires.
“Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child,
the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
—Matthew 18:4 (KJV)
What Happens When We Grow Up?
As we age, we accumulate knowledge, pain, betrayal, disappointment, and pride. We become “wise in our own eyes” (Proverbs 3:7). We build walls around our hearts and call it discernment, when in fact it’s often fear and bitterness. The world teaches us to trust no one but ourselves. But that’s the very self that must be crucified (Galatians 2:20).
We begin to value stability more than surrender. We chase success more than sanctity. And in the process, we lose the very innocence that made our souls childlike and tender before God.
But What Is God Really Asking?
To “become as little children” doesn’t mean we should return to immaturity, ignorance, or irresponsibility. It means to be:
-
Humble, knowing our need for a Savior (James 4:6)
-
Trusting, even when the future is uncertain (Proverbs 3:5–6)
-
Forgiving, letting go quickly (Ephesians 4:32)
-
Joyful, without the weight of the world (Romans 15:13)
-
Pure in heart, free from pride, guile, and pretense (Matthew 5:8)
Children are not worried about tomorrow. They rely on their parents to provide. And in the same way, God wants us to rely on Him for everything.
Prophetic Insight: The Return to Innocence
Is it any wonder that in the last stages of life, many elderly people begin to revert to childlike behaviors? This isn’t just biology. It is spiritual design.
“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time:
also he hath set the world in their heart…”
—Ecclesiastes 3:11 (KJV)
The soul, as it nears eternity, begins to long for its original state—that pure and untainted connection with its Creator. In these final days, we’re witnessing an explosion of knowledge, corruption, violence, and deception (Daniel 12:4; 2 Timothy 3:1–5). The world is growing cold. But Jesus said:
“Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
—Matthew 24:12–13 (KJV)
Enduring means keeping your heart tender—not hardened by the evil around you.
A Call to Repentance
Have you lost your childlike wonder? Have pain and pride stolen your purity? Are you hardened by sin, skeptical of God, or too busy performing to rest in His love?
Come back.
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings…”
—Jeremiah 3:22 (KJV)
Repent. Lay down your ego. Lay down your titles. Lay down your self-protection. And become a child again in the arms of your heavenly Father.
The Gospel Message
To become a child again is to start with salvation.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
—Romans 3:23 (KJV)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
—Romans 6:23 (KJV)
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.”
—Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Jesus Christ died for your sins. He took the punishment you deserved. And He rose again, offering eternal life to all who believe.
You don’t have to be good enough.
You just have to surrender.
Final Word
“Except ye be converted, and become as little children,
ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
—Matthew 18:3 (KJV)
This is not optional. This is urgent.
God is not looking for performance. He is looking for purity.
He’s not impressed by your résumé. He’s calling you to repentance.
He doesn’t need your intellect. He wants your heart.
Come back to Him as a child.
Soft. Trusting. Pure.
Because only the childlike will see the Kingdom.
