The Wisdom of God vs. The Foolishness of the World: Why Unbelievers Attack What They Do Not Understand

“Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.”
—1 Corinthians 2:6–7 (KJV)

We live in a time where disbelief is not only common but boldly and loudly celebrated. Social media platforms are filled with those who scoff at God, distort His Word, and spread confusion to those who do not seek the truth for themselves. Yet, the Scriptures warned us that this would happen.

Today, let us explore why unbelievers so aggressively oppose God, how their attacks reveal a deeper spiritual blindness, and why true wisdom is only revealed by the Spirit of God.

The Age of Outspoken Ignorance

Christ forewarned that in the last days, lawlessness would abound and the love of many would wax cold (Matthew 24:12). The Apostle Paul echoed this when he described perilous times filled with blasphemers and despisers of good (2 Timothy 3:1–5).

We now live in a digital age where everyone has a platform. Opinions are exalted over truth. Feelings are preferred over facts. Misinformation spreads rapidly, especially concerning matters of faith.

But as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2, true wisdom is not the wisdom of this age, nor is it the wisdom of the rulers of this world who are "coming to nothing." The wisdom of the world is temporary and fading. In contrast, the wisdom of God is eternal, hidden from the proud and revealed only to the humble through His Spirit.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
—Proverbs 1:7 (KJV)

Why the World Clings to Lies

People instinctively seek information that justifies their lifestyle. Much like searching Google with a biased phrase to comfort their fears, they seek philosophies, ideologies, and arguments that excuse rebellion and affirm their desires.

This should not surprise us, for Paul explained the nature of fallen humanity:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
—2 Timothy 4:3–4 (KJV)

At the heart of much unbelief is a refusal to surrender the flesh. Christ, who overcame sin and crucified the flesh, stands as a direct threat to the self-indulgent life many wish to protect.

The world seeks comfort for the flesh. Christ calls for the crucifixion of the flesh (Galatians 5:24).

Thus, the world resists Christ not because He is unworthy of belief, but because He demands surrender.

The Hidden Wisdom of God

Paul speaks of a wisdom that is hidden from the world:

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”
—1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV)

This wisdom is not accessible through human intellect alone. It is revealed by the Spirit of God. Without the Holy Spirit, a person cannot grasp the mysteries of salvation, righteousness, sanctification, or eternal life.

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
—1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)

This is why arguments alone cannot convert a soul. It is the Spirit of God who convicts, opens eyes, and transforms hearts.

A Call for Discernment and Boldness

Believers must not be discouraged by the loud scoffing of the world. Jesus assured us:

“If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.”
—John 15:18 (KJV)

Rather than retreating into fear or resentment, we are called to boldly stand in truth and pray for those still trapped in blindness. We must remember that even Paul himself once persecuted Christians before the Lord opened his eyes (Acts 9).

Every soul mocking God today could be tomorrow’s vessel for His glory.

But it is also crucial to guard our own hearts: to remain rooted in the Word, prayerful, and filled with the Spirit so that we are not drawn into compromise or despair.

A Powerful Call to Repentance

If you are reading this and realize you have been distant from God or have allowed worldly voices to drown out His truth, now is the time to turn back.

  • Humble yourself before Him:
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (James 4:8)

  • Repent of unbelief or compromise:
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out...” (Acts 3:19)

  • Seek the wisdom that only comes from above:
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally...” (James 1:5)

The Clear Gospel Message

Salvation is not found in the wisdom of this world but in the finished work of Jesus Christ:

  • Recognize your sin:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

  • Believe in Jesus Christ:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son...” (John 3:16)

  • Confess and receive Him:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

Today, choose the wisdom that leads to life eternal.
