π️ "Ye Are gods?" | What Jesus Really Meant in John 10—and Why It Still Matters in the Last Days
π Introduction: Are We Hearing Jesus Clearly?
As more people turn to the Bible during times of global unrest, deception is increasing—not only in the world, but even among those who claim to follow Christ. Misquoted Scripture, half-taught doctrines, and cultural confusion have clouded the truth of God’s Word.
One verse in particular—John 10:34, where Jesus says, “Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”—has been twisted by New Age teachers, false prophets, and even well-meaning Christians. But what did Jesus really mean? And why does this matter in a time when truth is under attack?
Let’s take a deeper look through the lens of Scripture—not oral tradition, not modern opinion—and expose what’s really going on.
π Jesus vs. the Religious Leaders – A Clash of Laws
“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”
—John 10:34 (KJV)
To understand this exchange, we need to understand who Jesus was speaking to and what they believed. The Pharisees were not just enforcing the Torah (the first five books of Moses); they had adopted a vast collection of oral traditions—eventually written down in the Mishnah centuries later.
These traditions added rules, reinterpreted Scripture, and elevated rabbinic commentary over God’s Word. Jesus rebuked this over and over:
“For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men... Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
—Mark 7:8–9 (KJV)
When Jesus said, “your law,” He was confronting their misuse and misinterpretation of Scripture. He referenced Psalm 82, not to affirm their authority—but to expose their hypocrisy and corruption.
π₯ Psalm 82 – The Context They Ignored
“I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.”
—Psalm 82:6–7 (KJV)
Psalm 82 is not praising men or declaring humanity divine. It's a rebuke of corrupt spiritual rulers—likely angelic beings or wicked judges—who failed to uphold justice and righteousness.
“God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.”
—Psalm 82:1 (KJV)
Jesus was reminding the Pharisees that even those given temporary authority can be judged if they stray from God’s commands. Far from calling them divine, He was saying: “You think you’re gods? Then why do you reject the Son of God sent to you?”
π Torah vs. Oral Law – Why the Distinction Matters
Modern Christians often assume that the Pharisees were faithfully teaching the Old Testament. In reality, they were adding burdens through man-made traditions.
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men...”
—Matthew 23:13 (KJV)
Jesus repeatedly clashed with their legalistic teachings, exposing that they were not standing on the Word of God—but on their own distorted version of it. This is why Paul later wrote:
“O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you...? Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?”
—Galatians 3:1–2 (KJV)
And again:
“The law was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come...”
—Galatians 3:19 (KJV)
Paul, a former Pharisee himself, was warning believers: do not fall back under the bondage of human tradition.
π End Times Application – The Rise of Counterfeit Religion
We live in a generation much like Jesus'—filled with religious pride, false authority, and distorted truth. Many spiritual leaders today still:
-
Add to Scripture with “revelations” or private interpretations
-
Preach a gospel of prosperity without repentance
-
Promote self-divinity under the guise of “spirituality”
This mirrors the apostasy and deception prophesied in the last days:
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine... and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
—2 Timothy 4:3–4 (KJV)
Jesus was clear: “My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
If you’re not hearing His voice today, maybe it’s time to ask: Whose words have I been following?
π₯ Jesus Declares His Divinity – And They're Still Blind
In John 10:36, Jesus confronts them again:
“Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?”
He clearly identifies Himself as divine, but they were spiritually blind. Why?
“But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep.” —John 10:26 (KJV)
The same spirit of unbelief exists today. Many reject Christ not because of lack of evidence, but because of hardness of heart and allegiance to false doctrine.
𧬠The Seed War – From Genesis to Revelation
“I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed...”
—Genesis 3:15 (KJV)
From the Garden of Eden, God prophesied a cosmic conflict—between the seed of the woman (Christ) and the seed of the serpent (Satan’s systems and followers). Every false religion, tradition, and rebellion is part of this war.
But in Christ, that enmity is destroyed:
“Having abolished in his flesh the enmity... for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace.”
—Ephesians 2:15 (KJV)
π₯ A Call to Repentance: Choose the Voice You Follow
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve...”
—Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
This is not just about theology—it’s about salvation. Jesus said:
“He that is not with me is against me.” —Matthew 12:30 (KJV)
You can’t follow both Christ and tradition. You can’t follow truth and comfort. You must choose the voice of the Shepherd over the lies of this world.
“Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.” —Matthew 15:13 (KJV)
✝️ The Gospel of Jesus Christ
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” —Romans 3:23 (KJV)
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” —Romans 5:8 (KJV)
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” —Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Today, Jesus is calling you—not at you, but to you. He came not to condemn, but to save. He is not just a teacher. He is the Son of God, crucified, risen, and returning soon.
Final Word: His Voice Still Speaks
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life.” —John 10:27–28 (KJV)
Are you His sheep?
Are you listening?
Choose Christ. Choose truth. Choose life.
