Can You Lose What You Didn’t Choose? Understanding John 15:16 and the Power of God’s Grace

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain…”
— John 15:16 (KJV)

In a world obsessed with personal freedom and self-made identity, Jesus' words in John 15:16 cut to the core of divine reality.
You didn’t choose God—He chose you.

This is the heart of grace: God initiates salvation.
We don’t earn it. We don’t stumble into it. And we certainly don’t control it.

But that leads to a sobering and often debated question:
If we didn’t choose Him, can we lose Him?

Let’s examine this question carefully, anchoring our understanding in Scripture.

“I Have Chosen You…”

In context, John 15:16 is part of Jesus’ final discourse to His disciples before the crucifixion.
He emphasizes a powerful truth:
Their relationship with Him was not accidental—it was sovereign.

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world…”
— Ephesians 1:4 (KJV)

God’s choice is not based on human merit, religious works, or future performance. It is rooted in His mercy and carried out for His purpose.

“It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
— Romans 9:16 (KJV)

Can You Lose What You Didn’t Choose?

This is the million-dollar question.
If God chose us, can we forfeit our salvation?

Some point to verses warning of falling away (Hebrews 6:4–6), while others emphasize the eternal security of believers.

Let’s break it down:

1. True Salvation Bears Fruit

“…that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain…”
— John 15:16 (KJV)

A key evidence of true salvation is enduring fruit.
Not perfection, but perseverance.

Jesus says elsewhere:

“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away…”
— John 15:2 (KJV)

Those who never produce fruit may have never truly belonged to Him, despite outward appearances (see Matthew 7:21–23).

2. God Keeps Those Who Are Truly His

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
— John 10:28 (KJV)

The Greek term for “pluck” means to seize or snatch away.
If Christ has truly saved you, no external force—not Satan, not the world, not even death—can separate you from Him (Romans 8:38–39).

But Scripture also warns that those who turn back may reveal that their hearts were never fully surrendered (1 John 2:19).

The Mystery of Human Will and Divine Grace

There’s no contradiction between God’s sovereignty and our responsibility.
He chooses, yes.
But we must respond in faith, abide in Christ, and endure to the end.

“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
— Matthew 24:13 (KJV)

This doesn’t mean salvation is maintained by works—but that it is verified by a life transformed by grace.

Grace doesn’t remove the need for repentance and obedience.
It empowers it.

Thank God for Grace

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)

Grace is not just the entry point to salvation—it’s the sustaining power behind it.
It picks us up when we fall. It convicts us when we drift. It preserves us in our weakness.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
— Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

The fact that you didn’t choose God first should bring comfort—not confusion.

It means He is the Author and Finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).
It means He holds you, not the other way around.

A Call to Repentance and Assurance

If you’re unsure whether you’ve truly been born again, don’t gamble with eternity.

God is still choosing.
And today, He is calling.

“Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts…”
— Hebrews 3:15 (KJV)

The Gospel Message

  1. You are a sinner.
     > “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

  2. You deserve death.
     > “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23)

  3. God sent His Son to die in your place.
     > “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

  4. You must repent, believe, and confess.
     > “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

You didn’t choose Him—He chose you.
Now choose to follow Him fully.
Forever.
