Sin, Self, and Sanctification: Letting Christ Purify the Heart

"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders..."
Mark 7:21, KJV

The world often defines sin by outward behavior, but Jesus made it clear—sin begins in the heart. It is not merely about the actions we take, but the condition of the soul from which those actions flow. Understanding this difference is critical for any believer seeking a genuine walk with Christ.

Sin: A Condition, Not Just Conduct

Many religious people focus on policing behavior, but Scripture draws our attention inward. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees, not because they broke the law, but because their hearts were full of hypocrisy and pride while they pretended to uphold righteousness (Matthew 23:27–28).

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
Jeremiah 17:9, KJV

Sin is not first a matter of hands—it is a matter of the heart. Our actions merely reveal what already dwells within us. Pride, greed, envy, lust, and rebellion against God don’t begin in public—they take root in private.

Judging Others vs. Examining Ourselves

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged..."
Matthew 7:1–2, KJV

Far too many Christians today are quick to call out the sins of others while ignoring their own. But Jesus warned against this double standard. Instead of being the spiritual police, we are called to be humble disciples, submitting our own hearts to the refining fire of God's Word.

Those who walk closely with Jesus don’t waste time pointing fingers—they spend their time in repentance and renewal.

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves..."
2 Corinthians 13:5, KJV

The Path of Purification: Draw Close, Be Refined

As we draw near to Christ, we begin to see ourselves more clearly—not through the lens of comparison, but through the lens of His holiness.

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."
James 4:8, KJV

The closer we get to His presence, the more we become aware of the impurities in our own hearts. And this is not condemnation—it’s purification. This is grace doing its work.

We are not called to remain in sin, nor to justify it. We are called to be transformed into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). He does not merely forgive us—He changes us.

The Religious vs. The Redeemed

There is a stark difference between the religious and the redeemed:

  • The religious focus on external compliance.

  • The redeemed seek internal transformation.

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
Psalm 51:10, KJV

True followers of Christ allow the Holy Spirit to reveal their sin, not so they can feel shame, but so they can experience freedom through confession and repentance.

A Call to Repentance

If you have spent more time looking at the sins of others than examining your own, today is the time to reverse course. Let your heart be the altar. Let God reveal what needs cleansing.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
1 John 1:9, KJV

A Clear Gospel Invitation

The Gospel is not just about forgiveness—it is about freedom from sin through the power of Christ.

  1. Recognize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior (Romans 3:23).

  2. Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again (Romans 10:9–10).

  3. Confess Him as Lord, and turn from your sin in repentance (Acts 3:19).

  4. Receive the Holy Spirit, who will empower you to live a new life in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Final Thought:

Let the Church stop pointing fingers and start lifting hands in surrender. Judgment begins at the house of God (1 Peter 4:17), and revival begins when the people of God fall on their knees in repentance.
