The Deadly Danger of Complacency in the Last Days
“So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot,
I will spue thee out of my mouth.”
— Revelation 3:16, KJV
In an age when distraction is constant and comfort is praised, a subtle but deadly enemy has crept into the church: complacency. Unlike outright rebellion or visible sin, complacency is quiet, religious, and—worst of all—acceptable. It lulls believers into a state of spiritual slumber where repentance grows cold, conviction is numbed, and holiness is exchanged for a counterfeit “peace.”
And in these last days, where spiritual warfare is intensifying and deception is on the rise, complacency is more dangerous than ever.
What Is Complacency?
Complacency is the false assurance that we are fine just as we are—no matter how far we’ve drifted from God’s presence. It tells us we have nothing to repent for, and nothing to fear.
“Woe to them that are at ease in Zion...”
— Amos 6:1, KJV
The danger isn’t always open sin—it’s often the hidden arrogance that says, “I’m good.”
But Scripture warns that pride blinds us to our true condition.
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
— Proverbs 16:18, KJV
Complacency Kills Repentance
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart,
O God, thou wilt not despise.”
— Psalm 51:17, KJV
One of the hallmarks of genuine faith is a posture of continual repentance. This doesn’t mean living in fear—but in humility, knowing our hearts are prone to wander.
Complacency replaces that humility with false assurance, often fueled by a misunderstood doctrine of “eternal security.” While it’s true that salvation is a gift from God, received by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9), Scripture never permits us to use grace as a license to sin.
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
God forbid.”
— Romans 6:1–2, KJV
The Doctrine of Eternal Security—Biblical or Twisted?
The biblical truth is that God secures those who truly abide in Him (John 10:28). But when “eternal security” is distorted into careless living, it becomes a trap. If we believe that a one-time prayer or church attendance justifies a life of sin, we have missed the gospel.
“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar,
and the truth is not in him.”
— 1 John 2:4, KJV
Complacency loves the idea of grace but resists the call to obedience and sanctification.
“Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
— 1 Peter 1:16, KJV
You Cannot Serve Two Masters
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other;
or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
— Matthew 6:24, KJV
Many try to balance Christianity with worldliness, but Jesus made it clear—there is no middle ground. To be “lukewarm” is to be rejected (Revelation 3:16). We cannot draw people to Christ while blending in with a culture hostile to Him.
Complacency creates a false Christianity: one that keeps the vocabulary of the faith but denies its power (2 Timothy 3:5).
A Call to Repentance: Return to the Fear of the Lord
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments:
for this is the whole duty of man.”
— Ecclesiastes 12:13, KJV
The time for comfort Christianity is over. The time for half-hearted devotion is over. The Spirit is calling the church to wake up, repent, and walk in holiness.
“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep:
for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
— Romans 13:11, KJV
The Gospel: Real Faith Produces Real Change
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV
True salvation is not merely an emotional moment—it is a transformation of the heart. Christ did not die to make us religious—He died to make us righteous. If you have never truly repented and placed your faith in Christ, today is the day.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.”
— Romans 10:9, KJV
Repent. Believe. Be filled with the Holy Spirit. And live a life that reflects Christ—not comfort.
Final Word: Break Free from Complacency Before It’s Too Late
This world is shaking. The birth pains of Matthew 24 are intensifying. And the Lord is coming for a holy bride, not a complacent church.
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing
of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity,
and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
— Titus 2:13–14, KJV
Now is the time to seek Him. Not tomorrow. Not when it's convenient.
Now.
