You First, Me Second: A Radical Call to Humility in a Self-Centered World
Introduction: The Upside-Down Call of the Kingdom
We live in an age where self-exaltation is not only normalized—it is celebrated. Social media algorithms reward vanity. Marketing campaigns push “self-love” and “put yourself first.” Our cultural ethos is built on the premise that you are the center of your own universe. But Scripture calls us to live radically different.
Philippians 2:3 (KJV) says,
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
This command from Paul is not a gentle suggestion. It is a countercultural declaration that reflects the very heart of Christ. In a world that promotes self-worship, the Word of God calls us to humility.
“You First, Me Second”: The Heart of Christlike Living
Imagine walking through your daily life—at work, the gas station, the grocery store—truly viewing everyone you meet as more important than yourself. Not out of false modesty or passive submission, but out of Spirit-led humility.
This is not about people-pleasing. This is about reflecting Jesus.
Philippians 2:5–8 goes on to say:
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation… he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Jesus, the King of Glory, lowered Himself—not just to wash feet, but to carry a cross for sinners who rejected Him. That is the model we are called to imitate.
The War Within: Spirit vs. Self
Even with the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, this calling is difficult. Why? Because our flesh resists it.
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh...” (Galatians 5:17, KJV)
The world’s message is constant:
“You do you.”
“Protect your peace.”
“Put yourself first.”
But the Bible says:
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
This is not merely self-denial for its own sake—it is death to self so that Christ may live through us.
Modern-Day Rebellion: The Idol of Self
The modern obsession with self-prioritization isn’t just poor advice—it’s prophetic fulfillment. Scripture warns us that in the last days, this attitude would explode.
2 Timothy 3:1–2 (KJV) says:
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves...”
Social media has turned narcissism into entertainment. The pursuit of self has become religion. And sadly, this has infiltrated even the Church. Pulpits now echo the world’s psychology more than God’s truth.
We must return to biblical humility. The kind that says, “You first, me second.” The kind that mirrors the humility of Christ.
Why Humility Matters in These Final Hours
As we watch global chaos unfold—wars, lawlessness, economic instability, technological control—it’s easy to retreat into self-preservation. But the last days are not a time for shrinking back. They are a time to shine as lights in the darkness.
Philippians 2:14–15 (KJV) calls us to this:
“Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless… in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.”
Humility is not weakness. It is spiritual power. It is the very evidence that Christ reigns in our hearts.
Practical Application: Living “You First” Daily
-
Pause before speaking
Ask, “Am I promoting self, or honoring Christ and others?” -
Prefer others in small moments
Let someone cut in front of you in line. Offer the better seat. Listen more than you speak. -
Seek the Spirit’s help
You cannot manufacture humility—it is the fruit of surrendering daily to the Holy Spirit.
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16) -
Kill pride at the root
Confess it quickly. Pride is subtle, but deadly. It is the sin that turned Lucifer into Satan. -
Remember the cross
The greatest act of humility in history was Christ laying down His life for you.
A Call to Repentance: From Pride to Brokenness
Have you placed yourself at the center? Have you exalted your opinions, your needs, your image, above God and others? Now is the time to repent.
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” (James 4:10)
Repentance is not shame—it is the open door to freedom. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).
The Gospel Message: From Self to Salvation
Our natural bent is toward pride.
“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way…” (Isaiah 53:6)
But Christ came to rescue us from ourselves.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
To receive salvation:
-
Acknowledge your sin and pride
-
Believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again for your redemption
-
Confess Him as Lord and surrender your life to Him
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus… thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
Conclusion: Let Christ Be First
Believer, you were not saved to exalt yourself—you were saved to exalt the One who died in your place. Let His humility become your posture. Let His Spirit lead your life. And in a world consumed with self, may you be a light that says—boldly and joyfully—you first, me second.
