Deny Yourself: Unmasking the Spiritual Deception of Alchemy and Self-Worship

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
—Luke 9:23 (KJV)

We are living in a time when ancient practices once associated with witchcraft, mysticism, and paganism are being repackaged in mainstream language shadow work, spiritual alchemy, self-awakening, divine feminine, higher self. These are not just trendy buzzwords. They are spiritual counterfeits, luring people away from the cross and into self-worship.

These practices are rooted in the same rebellion that led Lucifer to fall from heaven: exaltation of self above submission to God. While they are often disguised as emotional healing, self-help, or spiritual enlightenment, they are fundamentally opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Alchemy and Shadow Work: Ancient Lies with Modern Packaging

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”
—Colossians 2:8 (KJV)

Alchemy, in its historical form, was a proto-scientific pursuit to transform base metals into gold and to discover the philosopher’s stone the so-called elixir of eternal life. In modern spirituality, alchemy has evolved into a metaphor for inner transformation, with emphasis on self-discovery, self-empowerment, and “raising one’s consciousness.”

This is no longer just mystical language it is spiritual infiltration. The language of transmutation, healing energies, divine potential, and shadow integration is found not only in occult literature but across platforms masquerading as Christian encouragement. This deception is strategic.

Modern Alchemy Includes:

  • Shadow work (journaling to “integrate” your dark side)

  • Energy healing and meditation (outside of biblical meditation on God’s Word)

  • Creative manifestation (thinking or speaking things into existence)

  • Self-deification (you are your own healer, you are divine, you are the answer)

These teachings center on self as savior, a direct contradiction to the gospel of grace. The Bible says:

“It is no more I that live, but Christ liveth in me…”
—Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

The Danger of Self-Worship

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves…”
—2 Timothy 3:1–2 (KJV)

The gospel calls us to deny ourselves, not glorify ourselves. But modern spiritual trends are saturated with self-elevation. The phrases may sound innocent:

  • “I’m stepping into my power.”

  • “I’m awakening to my true self.”

  • “I’m healing my inner child.”

  • “I’m manifesting my destiny.”

Yet all of these echo the lie of the serpent: “Ye shall be as gods” (Genesis 3:5). Satan's strategy has always been the same: turn your eyes inward rather than upward.

This false doctrine is seductive because it offers what only Christ can give peace, healing, purpose but without submission, repentance, or the cross.

Discern the Spirits

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
—1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Many who claim to be spiritual are not aligned with the Holy Spirit of God. Some even use the name of Jesus while promoting teachings completely foreign to Scripture. Jesus warned:

“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
—Matthew 24:5 (KJV)

This includes those who market “Christian witchcraft,” “prophetic energy readings,” and “divine shadow work.” These practices are not led by the Holy Spirit. They are empowered by familiar spirits and doctrines of demons.

A Warning to the Body of Christ

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
—Hosea 4:6 (KJV)

Too many in the Church have embraced emotionalism over discernment. They have been conditioned to seek “positive affirmations” rather than biblical repentance. They are being seduced by flattering messages that elevate the self and suppress the cross.

Many TikToks and reels today masquerade as “words from the Lord” while preaching you, you, you what you manifested, what you defeated, what you created. The focus is no longer Christ, but self-glory. It is deception. It is flattery. It is spiritual death.

A Call to Repentance

Jesus is not calling us to awaken to ourselves. He is calling us to die to ourselves.

“Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
—Mark 8:34 (KJV)

If you have unknowingly engaged with practices like shadow work, spiritual alchemy, or self-empowerment doctrines, it is time to renounce them. These are not of God. They open doors to deception and hinder your walk with Christ.

Come back to the truth. Surrender your life to the only One who can truly transform you not from self into a higher self but from death into life.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

All have sinned.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
—Romans 3:23 (KJV)

Sin brings death.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
—Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Jesus paid the price.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
—Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Confess and believe.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
—Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Final Thoughts

True transformation does not come from the “god within.” It comes from Christ within. The Spirit of God does not lead us into shadow work He leads us into repentance, righteousness, and resurrection. Do not be deceived by the alchemists of this age. What appears to be healing may be spiritual bondage in disguise.

The truth sets you free but only if you first deny yourself.

Are you willing to put down self-discovery and pick up your cross?
