From Fig Leaves to Redemption: The Blood That Covers Sin
Genesis 3:6–21 (KJV)
Most sermons on Adam and Eve stop at the bite the moment Eve hands the fruit to Adam and their eyes are opened. But I want to take you beyond the moment of disobedience and into the depth of God's mercy. Because hidden in those early verses is one of the clearest foreshadows of the Gospel in the entire Old Testament.
The Cover-Up: Man’s Attempt to Hide Sin
“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”
Genesis 3:7 (KJV)
As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, shame entered the human story. Their instinct was the same as ours today: cover it up. They sewed fig leaves together to hide their nakedness. It was their best effort. It was their first act of religion a man-made attempt to fix a spiritual failure.
But fig leaves dry out. They crumble. They do not last. Man’s covering will always fall short of God's standard.
God’s Response: Blood Before Grace
“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”
Genesis 3:21 (KJV)
Here’s the turning point. God saw their attempt to cover themselves, but He did not accept it. Instead, He made them garments of skin. And you cannot have a garment of skin without a death. The first recorded death in the Bible is not Cain killing Abel. It is God sacrificing an animal to cover sin.
“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Hebrews 9:22 (KJV)
The blood of that animal was the first shadow of the cross, a prophetic glimpse of the Lamb of God who would come to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
From Genesis to Calvary: The Pattern of Redemption
In Genesis, blood covers sin. In Exodus, blood marks the doorposts to spare the Israelites from death (Exodus 12:13). In Leviticus, blood is sprinkled upon the mercy seat for atonement (Leviticus 17:11). And in the Gospels, the blood of Jesus is poured out for the remission of sins.
“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”
Hebrews 10:4 (KJV)
“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.”
Hebrews 10:12 (KJV)
From Eden to Calvary, there has always been only one way to deal with sin through blood. The fig leaves of our effort, good deeds, or outward religion are not sufficient. Only a divine covering will do.
Modern-Day Fig Leaves
Today’s fig leaves look different. We hide behind status, filters, busy schedules, charitable works, and intellectual excuses. But the core issue is unchanged we know we’re exposed. We know we need a covering.
Humanity has never stopped trying to sew fig leaves. The world says, “cover your guilt with distraction, self-help, and therapy.” But God says, “Let me cover you with the blood of My Son.”
A Call to Repentance: Stop Hiding, Start Trusting
Adam and Eve hid themselves among the trees of the garden. But the Lord came looking for them (Genesis 3:9). And He is still seeking today.
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Luke 19:10 (KJV)
You can stop hiding. You don’t have to live behind makeshift coverings. God has already made a way for your shame to be dealt with not by leaves, but by blood. Turn to Him. Let Him clothe you in righteousness.
The Gospel Message: The Covering That Saves
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion: The Real Covering
The story of Adam and Eve doesn’t end with banishment. It ends with blood. Not theirs, but God’s provision. That is the heart of the Gospel. From the very beginning, God demonstrated that He would rather shed blood than leave you in shame.
So if you’re still trying to cover yourself stop. Let the One who sought you in the garden clothe you with righteousness that never fades.
“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord… for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness.”
Isaiah 61:10 (KJV)
He covered Adam. He can cover you. Will you let Him?
