The Kingdom of God: Misunderstood, Misapplied, and Yet at Hand
"Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."
2 Timothy 3:7 (KJV)
There is a tragic irony unfolding today that mirrors the days of Christ’s earthly ministry. The religious elite of Jesus' time, like the Pharisees, had an encyclopedic knowledge of Scripture yet failed to recognize the very One those Scriptures pointed to. Today, a similar blindness is creeping across modern Christianity. There is a growing trend to intellectualize the faith while forsaking the Spirit’s discernment. This is exactly what Paul warned of: a people obsessed with information but devoid of revelation.
"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;"
"And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV)
These verses are not hypothetical. They are playing out now. Teachers are rising up, catering to the desires of man rather than the truth of God. Fables and myths have replaced biblical doctrine. One of the most alarming modern heresies is preterism, which claims that all biblical prophecy was fulfilled in the past. In doing so, it denies the urgency of Christ’s return, the reality of judgment, and the future Kingdom. This is a distortion that echoes the blindness of the Pharisees.
False Teachers in the End Times
"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."
2 Peter 2:1 (KJV)
False teachers do not enter through the front door. They infiltrate subtly, blending truth with error, using Scripture yet twisting it to fit their doctrines. This is what Jesus encountered. And it is what we face today. Preterism, like other false teachings, uses Luke 17:20-21 to suggest that the Kingdom of God is only spiritual and therefore not to be expected in any literal future sense:
"The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."
Luke 17:20-21 (KJV)
But Jesus was not abolishing the future Kingdom. He was revealing a present reality for the faithful that the Kingdom exists wherever God's reign is honored. That is not a contradiction to prophetic fulfillment; it is a dual truth. The Kingdom is both now and not yet.
A Present Kingdom with a Future Fulfillment
Jesus made the Kingdom visible through His miracles, His teachings, and His mercy. When He healed the woman with the issue of blood, He said:
"Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace."
Luke 8:48 (KJV)
That moment was a glimpse of the Kingdom. As believers today, we experience the Kingdom’s presence through the Holy Spirit especially after Pentecost. Gifts such as wisdom, intercession, and healing are divine tools that manifest God's Kingdom in this world. And the fruits of the Spirit love, joy, peace, longsuffering are not merely moral traits but evidence that the Kingdom is advancing in and through us.
"For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."
Romans 14:17 (KJV)
However, we must never lose sight of the future fulfillment of this Kingdom. Jesus will return. He will establish His rule on earth. The resurrection, the judgment, and the reign of Christ are not allegories. They are coming realities.
Spiritual Discernment is Urgent
Jesus spoke in parables for a reason. Spiritual truths are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14). If you approach Scripture with a carnal mind, you will be ensnared by lies dressed as enlightenment. Preterism and similar teachings are spreading like cancer and many are unprepared to spot the deception.
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"
1 Timothy 4:1 (KJV)
This is the time to test every teaching against the whole counsel of God's Word. Do not chase trends. Do not be captivated by “new revelations” that contradict Scripture. And do not be a tool in Satan’s hand by propagating doctrines that deny the power and promise of the Gospel.
A Call to Repentance and the True Gospel
If you have been caught in deception, there is grace for you. The Kingdom of God is not far. It is near. Jesus is still calling.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
The Kingdom of God is not a myth, and it is not entirely future. It is the reality of Christ’s rule today in the lives of the faithful and the unshakable promise of His return. Beware of doctrines that dismiss prophecy, diminish discernment, or distort the Gospel. Cling to Christ, walk in the Spirit, and look up for our redemption draweth nigh.
Stay grounded. Stay watchful. Stay true.
