Why the Law Condemns and the Spirit Gives Life
“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
—John 1:17 (KJV)
In a world full of well-meaning advice and religious traditions, one of the most misunderstood teachings is the role of the Law under the New Covenant. Many still cling to Mount Sinai, mistakenly believing that righteousness comes from striving to keep commandments, proving worthiness, or earning God’s favor. But this is not the message of the Gospel. This is not the covenant Christ came to establish.
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil looked beautiful but it led to death. So it is with the Law of Moses. It is holy and spiritual, but it was never meant to make us righteous. It was given to reveal our utter dependence on God and point us to Christ.
The Law Is Holy, but We Are Not
“Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.”
—Romans 7:12 (KJV)
God’s Law is perfect but that perfection exposes our imperfection. Just as touching Mount Sinai brought death (Exodus 19:12–13), so too does attempting to approach God through the Law without the covering of Christ. Paul calls it the “ministration of death” and the “ministration of condemnation.”
“For the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
—2 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV)
The Law’s Purpose: To Lead Us to Christ
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”
—Galatians 3:24 (KJV)
The Law was not given to make us righteous it was given to expose our sin and lead us to grace. It silences every boast and removes all self-righteousness. The Law prepares the way for the Lord, just as John the Baptist did. But John himself said:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
—John 3:30 (KJV)
Moses cannot save you. Elijah cannot save you. They testify, but they do not redeem. They point to the Lamb of God.
Salvation Is a Gift, Not a Wage
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
—Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
The moment we try to earn grace, it ceases to be grace. Righteousness is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift received by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. He alone fulfilled the Law. He alone bore our punishment. He alone gives us new life.
The New Covenant Reality: You Are a New Creation
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
—2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Salvation is not behavior modification. It is transformation. A born-again believer is not someone struggling to act holy they have been made holy by the blood of Christ. Like an apple tree producing apples, righteousness flows from the new nature implanted by God.
“Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”
—Romans 6:18 (KJV)
We are not slaves to sin. We are not under the Law. We are under grace. Therefore, sin shall not have dominion over us (Romans 6:14).
Stop Touching What Condemns You
“For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched... But ye are come unto mount Sion... and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.”
—Hebrews 12:18, 22, 24 (KJV)
Mount Sinai represents the old covenant of fear, distance, and judgment. Mount Zion represents the new covenant of grace, intimacy, and life. Stop touching the mountain that was meant to show you your need. You have come to the Savior who meets your need.
Stop reaching for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Reach for the Tree of Life.
The Spirit Leads Where the Law Could Not
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
—Romans 8:14 (KJV)
When we walk by the Spirit, the Law is fulfilled through us not by obligation, but by nature. We do not live holy to prove we are saved. We live holy because we are saved.
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
—2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
A Call to Repentance
To those who are still trying to earn their place before God, hear this clearly: you cannot. The Law condemns. The cross redeems. Grace is the only path to righteousness. If you are weary from striving, come to Christ. Lay down your works. Pick up your cross.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
The Gospel of Jesus Christ
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion: Life in the Spirit Begins Today
You were not meant to carry the weight of Sinai. You were meant to walk in the light of Zion. If you are in Christ, the Law has served its purpose. You are now free. Free to follow. Free to love. Free to live.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
—Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
The Spirit is calling. Leave the ministry of condemnation. Enter the ministry of life.
