Eternal Things vs. Fleeting Obsessions: A Wake-Up Call for the Church
“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV)
We live in a generation captivated by vanity. Social media, entertainment, wealth, and influence are the altars before which many bow. Yet Scripture reminds us that all of this is passing away. The glitter of this world is not gold in the eyes of God. Our priorities have drifted, and the church must be called back to what truly matters.
You Can't Take It With You
“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”
1 Timothy 6:7 (KJV)
The pursuit of money, fame, and possessions is a hollow chase. You can’t take your bank account, your social media following, or your luxury items with you into eternity. These things will burn with fervent heat (2 Peter 3:10). What will remain is the condition of your soul and your relationship with Jesus Christ.
Modern culture thrives on consumption and comparison. But as believers, we are called to live as pilgrims and strangers in this world (Hebrews 11:13). This earth is not our home. Our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20).
Do You Know the Fruit of the Spirit?
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance...”
Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)
It is a piercing observation. Many can recite entire song lyrics or dialogue from their favorite Netflix series, yet they cannot name the fruit of the Spirit. This is not condemnation but an urgent call to examine what we are feeding our minds and hearts.
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). What are you storing in your heart? The words of life or the noise of the world?
Spiritual Malnourishment in a Digital Age
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge...”
Hosea 4:6 (KJV)
Entertainment has become the new religion for many. Instead of meditating on God’s Word day and night (Psalm 1:2), we binge content that neither edifies nor convicts. We have traded the Bread of Life for digital junk food.
It is not wrong to enjoy music or storytelling. But when we know more about a celebrity's life than the life of Jesus, when we can quote a film but not a single verse from Romans, we must acknowledge that our spiritual appetite has been corrupted.
This Is Not Condemnation. It Is Correction.
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”
Revelation 3:19 (KJV)
To call someone out of a burning house is not hatred but love. The same applies spiritually. This word is not spoken to shame you but to awaken you. There is a beauty in Christ that far surpasses the thrills of this world, but many will miss it not because it wasn't available but because they were too distracted to look.
Jesus is knocking, but the noise of the world has drowned Him out.
Modern Distraction and the Coming Judgment
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves... lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God”
2 Timothy 3:1–4 (KJV)
We are living in the age Paul prophesied. Self-obsession is rampant. Filters mask reality. Influencers promote vanity. Pleasure is pursued over holiness. And yet, judgment is coming.
Global instability, rising lawlessness, and spiritual apathy are all prophetic signs. The time is short. We must return to our first love (Revelation 2:4). The warnings of God are not without grace. He is still calling His people to repentance.
A Call to Repentance: Wake Up, Church
“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
Romans 13:11 (KJV)
God is calling His people out of slumber. He is shaking the idols of entertainment, money, and ego. He is drawing a line in the sand. Will you serve the world or will you serve Christ?
The pleasures of this life are fading. The beauty of Christ is eternal. Do not let distractions rob you of your destiny. Turn off the noise. Open the Word. Commune with the Lord.
The Gospel Message: Your Eternal Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
If you are reading this and have not yet made Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, do not delay. Repent of your sins. Believe that Jesus died for you and rose again. Surrender your life to Him and receive eternal life.
Conclusion: Choose What Will Last
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2 (KJV)
You were created for more than chasing trends, likes, and temporal pleasures. You were created to walk with God, to be filled with His Spirit, and to reflect His glory in a dark world.
This is your wake-up call. Let the world fade into the background and let Christ be magnified in your life. Eternity is closer than we think. Let us live with urgency, with holiness, and with the Word of God hidden in our hearts.
