The Restrainer: A Biblical Prophecy Study Rooted in Numbers and 2 Thessalonians
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (KJV)
The identity of the “restrainer” in Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians has long been debated. Some claim it's the Holy Spirit, others suggest it's Michael the Archangel, while many believe it represents the Church itself. In this study, we will explore a compelling Old Testament typology from the Book of Numbers that points to the Church, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, acting as the restrainer shielding the world from God’s wrath until the appointed time.
Learning from the Past: Why the Old Testament Matters
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
— Romans 15:4 (KJV)
When interpreting New Testament prophecy, we are instructed to look to the Old Testament for patterns and insights. God’s Word is consistent from Genesis to Revelation, and often what occurs in the Old Testament serves as a shadow of things to come (Colossians 2:17, Hebrews 10:1). Let us turn to one such example in the Book of Numbers.
The Levites as the First “Restrainer”
“But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel.”
— Numbers 1:53 (KJV)
The Levites were divinely assigned to camp around the Tabernacle while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Their position was not arbitrary; they were stationed there to prevent the wrath of God from breaking out upon the rest of the congregation. In essence, they served as a buffer between the holiness of God and the sinfulness of the people.
This is a striking image. Imagine the twelve tribes encamped around the Tabernacle, and the Levites forming a human shield around the very presence of God. Their obedience and position held back judgment.
Visual Typology: A Picture of the Church
“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood…”
— 1 Peter 2:5 (KJV)
“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father…”
— Revelation 1:6 (KJV)
In the New Covenant, born-again believers are called a royal priesthood. Just as the Levites surrounded the Tabernacle, the Church, empowered by the indwelling Holy Spirit, surrounds the world and acts as a spiritual barrier to the outpouring of God's wrath.
This is the restraining force Paul describes in 2 Thessalonians 2:7. It is the Church the body of Christ that holds back lawlessness and judgment by the presence of the Holy Spirit within. Once the Church is removed (i.e., at the Rapture), the floodgates of divine wrath will be opened.
The Aerial View: A Cross-Shaped Camp
Historical reconstructions based on tribal populations and camp instructions in Numbers 2 reveal that the Israelite encampment likely formed a cross shape when viewed from above. This astonishing detail foreshadows the crucifixion of Christ and demonstrates that even in the wilderness, God was painting a picture of redemption and restraint.
They didn’t even know what a cross meant in their time. Yet God’s sovereign plan was unfolding in every detail.
Ambassadors Removed Before Wrath Falls
“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ…”
— 2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV)
Imagine a nation preparing to declare war. Before doing so, they would remove all their ambassadors from the enemy country. Likewise, before the final outpouring of God’s wrath in the Tribulation, He will remove His ambassadors the Church.
Until then, believers are restraining evil by proclaiming truth, interceding in prayer, and being salt and light in a decaying world (Matthew 5:13-14).
The Tribulation Saints and the Indwelling Spirit
Some argue that the Holy Spirit will be entirely removed during the Tribulation. But this contradicts the existence of Tribulation saints.
“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations... stood before the throne... These are they which came out of great tribulation…”
— Revelation 7:9, 14 (KJV)
These believers must have been sealed by the Holy Spirit, for no one can be saved apart from Him (John 3:5, Titus 3:5). This shows that while the Church as the restrainer will be removed, the Spirit will still draw individuals to salvation during this final, dreadful season.
Summary: Connecting the Dots
-
The Levites encamped around the Tabernacle to shield the people from God’s wrath.
-
The Church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, now serves that same purpose on a global scale.
-
Once removed, as prophesied in 2 Thessalonians 2:7, divine judgment will fall.
-
The shape of the Israelite camp, a cross, foreshadows the redemptive work of Christ and His current restraining ministry through His Church.
-
God’s patterns are deliberate. The Church is the New Testament echo of the Levites’ ancient role.
A Call to Repentance: Time Is Running Out
God’s mercy delays His judgment, but not forever.
“Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live…”
— Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV)
Just as the Levites were removed from their post would have meant wrath for Israel, the removal of the Church will signal the unleashing of judgment upon a rebellious world. Now is the time to seek the Lord while He may be found.
The Gospel Message: The Door Is Still Open
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
— Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
— Romans 10:9 (KJV)
If you have not yet given your life to Christ, now is the time. Repent of your sins, believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ, and receive eternal life. The restrainer will not hold back the storm forever.
Conclusion
The prophetic symbolism of the Levites surrounding the Tabernacle is not mere coincidence. It is a divine foreshadowing of the Church’s role in this present age. As the world darkens and lawlessness increases, the call to holiness, readiness, and repentance grows louder.
The restrainer is still here, but not for long.
