Finished Work of the Cross

“Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.” John 14:30 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words on the eve of the cross.

The ruler of this world was coming.

Yet Christ declared something profound.

He has nothing in me.

This statement reveals both the authority of the enemy and the greater authority of Christ.

I. The Ruler of This World: A Temporary Authority

Scripture acknowledges that Satan operates within this world.

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)

Through deception, sin entered.

Through sin, corruption spread.

Humanity, created to reflect God, fell into rebellion.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin.” Romans 5:12 (KJV)

The enemy’s influence is real.

But it is not ultimate.

It is temporary.

II. The Promise of Redemption

From the beginning, God declared His plan.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman… it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15 (KJV)

This is the first announcement of the Gospel.

The serpent would wound.

But the seed would crush.

This pointed forward to Christ.

III. Christ’s Perfect Obedience

Jesus did what no one else could.

He lived without sin.

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)

Because of this, the enemy had no claim.

No accusation.
No foothold.
No authority over Him.

This is why Jesus could say:

He has nothing in me.

IV. The Cross: Justice and Mercy Meet

At the cross, everything changed.

Christ bore what humanity deserved.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

Justice was satisfied.

Mercy was extended.

The penalty of sin was paid.

“The wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Christ took that wage upon Himself.

V. Victory Over the Enemy

The cross was not defeat.

It was victory.

“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15 (KJV)

The enemy’s power was broken.

His accusations were silenced.

His authority was defeated.

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” 1 Corinthians 15:54 (KJV)

VI. Justification: Declared Righteous

Through faith in Christ, something remarkable happens.

Justification.

“Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1 (KJV)

This means:

• Your sin is forgiven
• Christ’s righteousness is credited to you
• Your standing before God is changed

This is not earned.

It is given.

VII. The End of Condemnation

If God has declared you righteous, who can condemn you?

“Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.” Romans 8:33 (KJV)

The enemy accuses.

But Christ intercedes.

“Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died… who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 (KJV)

Condemnation no longer has authority.

VIII. The Light That Overcomes Darkness

Christ is the light.

“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness.” John 8:12 (KJV)

Darkness cannot overcome light.

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” John 1:5 (KJV)

When you are in Christ, that light is in you.

Not by your strength.

But by His presence.

IX. Living in Victory

Because of Christ:

• Fear loses its power
• Death loses its sting
• The enemy loses his hold

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” 1 Corinthians 15:55 (KJV)

Victory is not something to earn.

It is something to stand in.

X. Modern Reality: Fear and Anxiety

Despite this truth, many live in fear.

Anxiety.
Uncertainty.
Spiritual doubt.

This happens when focus shifts away from the cross.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.” Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

Peace is found in remembering what Christ has already done.

A Call to Repentance

If you have been living in fear instead of faith, the call is to return.

Return to the truth of the Gospel.

Return to the finished work of Christ.

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Galatians 5:1 (KJV)

Do not give authority to what Christ has already defeated.

The Gospel Invitation

All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)

Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Conclusion

The ruler of this world came.

But he had nothing in Christ.

And for those in Christ, he has no ultimate authority.

The cross has spoken.

Sin is paid for.
Death is defeated.
Victory is secured.

Stand in that truth.

For what Christ has finished, no enemy can undo.
