Abiding, Pruning, and Real Fruit
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.” John 15:1 (KJV)
This passage is one of the clearest pictures of the Christian life.
Not effort.
Not performance.
Connection.
I. Christ Is the Source, Not You
When you believe in Jesus, you are joined to Him.
Grafted into the vine.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches… for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 (KJV)
This is foundational.
You are not the source of life.
Christ is.
Every attempt to produce fruit apart from Him will fail.
II. Fruit Is the Result of Abiding
Fruit is not forced.
It is the natural outcome of connection.
“Abide in me, and I in you.” John 15:4 (KJV)
Just like a tree:
• It doesn’t strain
• It doesn’t perform
• It remains rooted
And fruit comes.
The same is true spiritually.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” Galatians 5:22 (KJV)
Notice:
It is the fruit of the Spirit.
Not the fruit of your effort.
III. Alignment of Will Matters
Abiding is not passive.
It involves surrender.
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you…” John 15:7 (KJV)
This means:
• Your thinking aligns with Scripture
• Your desires begin to change
• Your will submits to God’s will
Misalignment leads to fruitlessness.
Not because God withholds.
But because connection is disrupted.
IV. Pruning: The Necessary Process
God does not leave His people unchanged.
He prunes.
“Every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” John 15:2 (KJV)
Pruning removes:
• Sin
• Distractions
• Attachments
• Hindrances
It can be uncomfortable.
But it is purposeful.
“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.” Hebrews 12:6 (KJV)
Pruning is not rejection.
It is refinement.
V. Partial Surrender Produces Partial Fruit
Many surrender parts of their life.
But hold on to others.
This creates inconsistency.
• Growth in some areas
• Stagnation in others
“No man can serve two masters.” Matthew 6:24 (KJV)
God does not call for partial surrender.
He calls for all.
When everything is yielded, growth becomes consistent.
VI. What About “Dead Branches”?
This part must be understood carefully.
“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away…” John 15:2 (KJV)
This is not teaching that true believers are casually discarded.
Scripture clarifies:
“My sheep hear my voice… and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish.” John 10:27–28 (KJV)
Instead, this points to:
• False profession without real connection
• Or severe discipline and removal of unfruitful influence
True life remains rooted in Christ.
VII. Trusting the Process
Pruning requires trust.
God removes what harms.
And preserves what produces life.
“Being confident… that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it.” Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
You are not being destroyed.
You are being shaped.
VIII. Modern Struggle: Trying Without Abiding
Many try to:
• Be more loving
• Be more patient
• Be more disciplined
But without abiding, effort becomes exhausting.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” 2 Timothy 3:5 (KJV)
The power is not in trying.
It is in remaining.
A Call to Repentance
If you have been striving without surrender, the call is simple.
Return to abiding.
Return to dependence.
Return to Christ.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” James 4:8 (KJV)
Let Him prune.
Let Him lead.
Let Him produce.
The Gospel Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
You are not the vine.
You are the branch.
Your role is not to produce life.
It is to remain connected to the One who does.
Abide in Christ.
Trust the pruning.
Surrender fully.
And the fruit will come.
Not by your strength.
But by His life flowing through you.
