The Beginning of Wisdom
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
Biblically, foolishness is not mainly about intelligence.
It is about direction.
It is possible to:
• Know facts
• Understand concepts
• Even believe God exists
And still live foolishly.
Why?
Because wisdom is not merely information.
It is submission to God’s truth.
I. The Fool in Scripture
“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” Psalm 14:1 (KJV)
This does not only describe atheism.
It describes a way of living.
A person may verbally acknowledge God while practically living as though His authority does not matter.
This is self-rule.
It says:
• “My desires come first.”
• “My emotions determine truth.”
• “My way matters more than God’s way.”
That is biblical foolishness.
II. Wisdom Is About Governance
The deeper issue is this:
What governs your life?
“The law of the wise is a fountain of life.” Proverbs 13:14 (KJV)
Everyone lives under some governing principle.
Either:
• God’s truth governs you
• Or self governs you
There is no neutral ground.
III. The Danger of Self-Rule
Scripture repeatedly warns about trusting self above God.
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)
Self-rule often feels justified.
It can seem reasonable emotionally.
But emotions are unstable foundations.
“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool.” Proverbs 28:26 (KJV)
Feelings are real.
But they are not always reliable.
IV. A Fool Rejects Correction
One of the clearest marks of foolishness is resistance to instruction.
“A fool despiseth his father’s instruction.” Proverbs 15:5 (KJV)
Correction feels offensive to the fool because pride is governing the heart.
Wisdom, however, receives correction humbly.
“He that regardeth reproof is prudent.” Proverbs 15:5 (KJV)
Growth requires teachability.
V. Repeated Cycles Reveal the Governing Law
Scripture uses strong imagery.
“As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.” Proverbs 26:11 (KJV)
Without transformation, cycles repeat:
• Same reactions
• Same sins
• Same destruction
Not because God is absent.
But because the governing principle remains unchanged.
VI. Wisdom Produces Stability
Jesus illustrated this through two builders.
“Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man.” Matthew 7:24 (KJV)
The wise builder:
• Hears truth
• Applies truth
• Builds on truth
The foolish builder hears the same truth.
But ignores it.
The difference is not exposure.
It is obedience.
VII. Knowledge Alone Is Not Wisdom
Many hear truth without transformation.
“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” James 1:22 (KJV)
Knowledge without obedience leads to deception.
Wisdom is not merely hearing Scripture.
It is allowing Scripture to govern life.
VIII. The Role of Emotion
Emotions are part of human life.
But they make poor masters.
“A fool uttereth all his mind.” Proverbs 29:11 (KJV)
When emotion governs:
• Decisions become impulsive
• Reactions become unstable
• Perspective becomes distorted
God’s truth must lead above emotion.
IX. Modern Culture and Self-Governance
Modern culture celebrates self-rule.
• “Follow your heart.”
• “Live your truth.”
• “Do what feels right.”
But Scripture warns against this mindset.
The heart itself needs transformation.
“The heart is deceitful above all things.” Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)
Without God’s wisdom, self-rule eventually collapses.
X. Wisdom Begins With Surrender
True wisdom starts not with intellect.
But with reverence for God.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.” Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
This means:
• Submitting to His authority
• Receiving correction
• Building on His truth
Wisdom is ultimately relational.
It flows from walking with God.
A Call to Repentance
If self-rule has been governing your life, the call is to return.
Return to God’s wisdom.
Return to His Word.
Return to surrender.
“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord.” Proverbs 3:7 (KJV)
Let His truth govern your life, not impulse, pride, or emotion.
The Gospel Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
The difference between wisdom and foolishness is not intelligence.
It is what governs the heart.
One life is directed by self.
The other by God’s truth.
One repeats destruction.
The other becomes a fountain of life.
Build your life on Christ.
For storms will come to every house.
But only the life built on truth will stand.
