the Transformation of Desire

“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7 (KJV)

This promise is powerful.

But it is often misunderstood.

It is not a blank check for human desire.

It is a promise rooted in relationship.

I. The Condition: Abiding in Christ

The promise begins with a condition.

“If ye abide in me…”

Abiding means:

• Remaining in Christ
• Staying connected to Him
• Living in continual dependence

“And my words abide in you…”

This means:

• Scripture shapes your thinking
• Truth governs your decisions
• God’s will becomes your guide

The promise is not separate from the condition.

It flows from it.

II. Desire Is Not Denied, It Is Transformed

God does not ignore desire.

He transforms it.

“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:4 (KJV)

This does not mean:

God gives whatever you want.

It means:

God reshapes what you want.

As you delight in Him:

• Your desires align with His will
• Your priorities shift
• Your requests change

III. The Problem of Flesh-Driven Desires

Not all desires are good.

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” James 4:3 (KJV)

Desires driven by the flesh lead to:

• Destruction
• Addiction
• Emptiness

“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit.” Galatians 5:17 (KJV)

God does not grant what will harm you.

That is not rejection.

It is protection.

IV. God’s Refusal Is Often Mercy

Unanswered prayers are not always denial.

They are often protection.

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.” Hebrews 12:6 (KJV)

God sees:

• What you cannot see
• What lies ahead
• What will harm or help

What feels like delay or denial may actually be preservation.

V. The Role of Repentance and Renewal

Transformation begins with surrender.

“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 (KJV)

This involves:

• Turning from destructive desires
• Submitting to God’s will
• Allowing the Spirit to reshape the heart

As this happens, desires become:

• Healthier
• Aligned
• Life-giving

VI. Crucifying the Flesh

Scripture calls for a decisive break from flesh-driven living.

“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” Galatians 5:24 (KJV)

This is not passive.

It is intentional.

It means:

• Saying no to what destroys
• Saying yes to what God desires
• Choosing Spirit over flesh

VII. Living by the Spirit

When the Spirit leads, fruit follows.

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 (KJV)

This produces:

• Peace
• Clarity
• Stability

And ultimately, aligned desires.

VIII. Prayer Within God’s Will

True prayer is not about control.

It is about alignment.

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.” 1 John 5:14 (KJV)

When your will aligns with His:

• Your prayers change
• Your expectations shift
• Your confidence grows

IX. More Than You Expected

God does not just meet requests.

He exceeds them.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20 (KJV)

But this comes through:

• Relationship
• Alignment
• Trust

Not demand.

A Call to Repentance

If your desires have been leading you away from God, the call is to return.

Return to abiding.

Return to surrender.

Return to trust.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God.” James 4:7 (KJV)

Let Him reshape your heart.

The Gospel Invitation

All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)

Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)

Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Conclusion

God does answer prayer.

But He answers aligned prayer.

Abiding changes everything.

It changes:

• What you want
• What you ask
• What you expect

And in that place, you discover something greater than answered requests.

You discover a transformed heart.

And in that transformation, true fulfillment is found.
