Seek first the Kingdom
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
Many approach God with a simple pattern.
Give me.
Fix this.
Change that.
While God does provide, Scripture reveals a deeper issue.
The problem is not asking.
The problem is what we are truly seeking.
I. Faith That Seeks the Person, Not the Provision
There is a kind of faith that goes beyond desire for blessing.
It is faith that recognizes worth.
“Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Matthew 15:27 (KJV)
This response revealed humility and recognition.
She did not demand.
She acknowledged.
“Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith.” Matthew 15:28 (KJV)
This kind of faith is rare.
It values Christ above what He gives.
II. The Danger of Loving the Gift More Than the Giver
Human nature gravitates toward blessings.
Provision feels good.
Answered prayers bring relief.
Circumstances improve.
But seeking blessings alone can become distractions.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 (KJV)
When blessings become the focus, they take the place of God.
This leads to a subtle form of idolatry.
Seeking what God gives more than seeking God Himself.
III. A Misunderstood Relationship
Many treat God transactionally.
If something breaks, they pray.
If something is needed, they ask.
Outside of that, there is little connection.
This reduces God to a function.
Rather than a Father.
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven…” Matthew 6:9 (KJV)
God is not meant to be approached only in crisis.
He is meant to be known in relationship.
IV. Gratitude Over Demand
Scripture shifts the posture of prayer.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6 (KJV)
Notice the order.
Not just asking.
Thanksgiving.
Gratitude transforms perspective.
Instead of:
• Fix this
• Change that
The heart begins to say:
• Thank you
• I trust you
• Your timing is perfect
This is faith.
V. God’s Work Beyond What Is Seen
Not every prayer is answered immediately.
Not every situation is resolved quickly.
Yet God is always working.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” Romans 8:28 (KJV)
Sometimes what feels like delay is preparation.
Sometimes what feels like lack is refinement.
God is not withholding.
He is shaping.
VI. The Heart Condition: What Are You Really After?
This question is essential.
Why do you seek God?
• For provision?
• For relief?
• For comfort?
Or for Him?
“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:4 (KJV)
When delight shifts to God, desires begin to align with Him.
VII. Modern Reality: A Culture of Convenience
Today’s mindset often reflects convenience.
Quick answers.
Instant results.
Immediate relief.
This mindset can carry into faith.
God becomes:
• A solution provider
• A problem fixer
• A last resort
But Scripture calls for something deeper.
Relationship.
Trust.
Surrender.
VIII. True Faith Produces Transformation
When the focus shifts from blessing to God, something changes.
Peace replaces anxiety.
Trust replaces control.
Gratitude replaces demand.
This is not passive.
It is powerful.
“And the peace of God… shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 (KJV)
A Call to Repentance
If your prayers have been centered only on what you need, the call is to realign.
Return to God as Father.
Seek Him first.
Not just His hand, but His heart.
“Seek ye the Lord while he may be found.” Isaiah 55:6 (KJV)
Let gratitude replace demand.
Let trust replace control.
The Gospel Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
God is eternal.
If you seek only what He gives, you will always be unsatisfied.
But if you seek Him, everything else finds its proper place.
Do not miss the Giver while chasing the gift.
For in Him is not only provision.
But life itself.
