Can You Lose Your Salvation? Resting in the Unfailing Work of Christ
"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."
—Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
Many believers, though genuinely saved, struggle with the nagging question: Am I really secure in Christ?
Perhaps you have stumbled. Perhaps your heart aches over sins you thought you had overcome. And perhaps fear creeps in: Have I lost my salvation?
Beloved, let us turn to the Word of God and find peace for our souls. Your salvation was never dependent upon your strength, your works, or your merit. It began with Christ, is sustained by Christ, and will be completed by Christ.
Salvation: A Work of God, Not Man
Ephesians 2:1 reminds us that before Christ found us, we were "dead in trespasses and sins." Dead people do not seek life. Dead people do not reach for help. It was God, rich in mercy, who breathed life into us by His Spirit.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
—Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
Salvation is not something we earn, nor is it something we can maintain by human effort. It is the sovereign work of a faithful God.
If Salvation Could Be Lost, Christ Would Have to Fail
The terrifying lie that one can lose salvation implies that the perfect work of Jesus Christ could somehow be undone.
Yet Scripture proclaims:
"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."
—John 6:37 (KJV)
And again:
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."
—John 10:28 (KJV)
The guarantee of your salvation is not rooted in your ability to hold onto God, but in God's unbreakable promise to hold onto you.
If Jesus could fail to keep you, He would cease to be perfect.
If salvation could be lost, then eternal life would not be truly eternal.
Praise God, He cannot fail!
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
—Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
Assurance Rooted in the Gospel
Satan loves to whisper doubt into the hearts of believers. He accuses day and night (Revelation 12:10), seeking to rob us of joy and boldness.
But the Gospel stands as our unshakable defense:
-
Christ’s blood has paid the full price.
-
Christ’s righteousness has been credited to our account.
-
Christ’s resurrection is the eternal proof of victory over sin and death.
"Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth."
—Romans 8:33 (KJV)
If God Himself has justified you, no accusation — not even your own — can condemn you.
A Call to Perseverance, Not Fear
The believer’s life is a journey of growth, not perfection. There will be struggles. There will be falls. But the Spirit within you testifies that you are a child of God (Romans 8:16).
"For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again..."
—Proverbs 24:16 (KJV)
When you fall, repent. When you stumble, return to the cross.
But never believe the lie that you have been cast away.
Your salvation is anchored in Christ’s obedience, not your own.
"He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied."
—Isaiah 53:11 (KJV)
The Father is satisfied with the sacrifice of His Son. And if you are in Christ, you are eternally secure.
A Powerful Call to Repentance and Assurance
If you have doubted, if you have feared, come back to the simplicity of the Gospel:
-
Confess your weakness:
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins..." (1 John 1:9) -
Rest in Christ’s sufficiency:
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1) -
Renew your mind daily:
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (Romans 12:2)
You are secure because Christ is faithful.
You are held because Christ is strong.
You are loved because Christ finished the work.
A Clear Gospel Invitation
If you have never fully trusted Christ alone for salvation, today is the day:
-
Acknowledge you are a sinner:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) -
Believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord:
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) -
Confess Him before men:
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9)
Receive Him. Rest in Him. Rejoice in Him.
