Children Are a Blessing, Not a Burden: Seeing God’s Hand in Parenthood
I want to talk about something society often downplays, dismisses, or delays: children.
In a world that prizes independence, success, and self-promotion, children are often seen as an inconvenience—an interruption to personal freedom. But that’s not how God sees them.
“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.”
Psalm 127:3-5 (KJV)
Parenthood: The Real Test of Peace
I know some say, “I’m not ready for kids” or “I’m too young.” And to that I say—no rush. But if you really want to test your character, your patience, and your capacity to love, raise a child. Children will show you who you are on the inside.
They don’t just draw out your strength. They draw out your weaknesses. They mirror your tone, test your words, and stretch your love to its limits. You think you're spiritually mature? Spend a day with a toddler.
“And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
God’s Purpose in Parenting
Sometimes we think our kids are just for us—for our legacy or personal joy. But children often bring healing and joy to our parents, our families, and our communities. Grandparents beam. Strangers smile. Whole generations are affected by the presence of one child.
Even Jesus Himself welcomed children with open arms and held them up as examples of how we must be to enter the kingdom.
“But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:14 (KJV)
“Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:4 (KJV)
Children carry innocence, curiosity, and unfiltered honesty. They don't care about your title. They don't care how many followers you have. They care about your attention, your love, and your example.
Reclaiming Joy in the Simple Moments
Raising children helps us slow down and rediscover the sacred in the simple. One moment they’re testing your patience. The next, they’re asking if you brushed your teeth or planning your chores for you.
They notice everything. They remember everything. They hold you accountable in the most endearing ways. And that’s part of God’s design. Our children are instruments of sanctification—used to grow us in humility, patience, and grace.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
But we must be careful not to overlook our children in pursuit of stuff—houses, promotions, status, or self-indulgence. We live in a materialistic world that tries to convince us that more things will bring more joy. But nothing you buy compares to the joy that lives in a child's laughter, questions, and hugs.
A Call to Honor God in Parenting
If you have children, don’t take them for granted. If you're planning to, don’t fear the responsibility. If you’ve neglected your role, it’s not too late to return with humility and seek to be the parent God has called you to be.
Every child is knit together by God, not just for earthly purpose, but for eternal significance.
“Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”
Psalm 40:7-8 (KJV)
A Call to Repentance and Renewal
Maybe this message hits hard because you haven’t been the example you should have been. Maybe you're weighed down by guilt or overwhelmed by parenting. You’re not alone. God’s grace is sufficient.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Turn to Him. Bring your parenting, your fears, your children, and your heart to His throne. He is a faithful Father.
The Gospel Message: Begin Again with Christ
Whether you're a parent or not, we all need new beginnings. Sin separates us from God, but Jesus Christ paid the price for our reconciliation.
Confess your need. Believe in His sacrifice. Receive eternal life. Let your legacy begin with redemption.
We are all sinners
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
-
Sin brings separation, but Jesus brings life
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
-
Jesus died for you
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
-
Salvation is by faith
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
You can be saved today. Right now. Call on the name of Jesus and surrender your heart to Him.
Conclusion
Children are a gift. They are not just part of your future. They are part of your present assignment. They reveal God’s joy, test your maturity, and help refine your love. Whether you're raising a child, mentoring one, or simply learning to appreciate them through new eyes—never forget that children are the heritage of the Lord.
Let us raise them in truth, cover them in prayer, and reflect God’s heart to them daily. For in doing so, we not only shape a life—we honor the One who gave it.
