You Can’t Be Good Without God: Why New Birth Is the Only Way to True Life
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags…”
— Isaiah 64:6 (KJV)
In today’s culture, “being a good person” is often viewed as enough. If you’re kind, generous, and well-meaning, surely that counts for something in God’s eyes, right?
Wrong.
According to Scripture, you can be good—but you can’t do anything truly good without God.
Human goodness, apart from divine transformation, is still stained by sin.
Jesus didn’t come to improve your behavior.
He came to give you new life.
You Must Be Born Again
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3 (KJV)
When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, a respected religious leader, He didn’t praise his morality or religious discipline.
He told him plainly: you must be born again.
This spiritual rebirth is not a suggestion.
It is the requirement for salvation and eternal life.
Without it, no matter how many good deeds you perform, you remain spiritually dead—separated from the holiness of God.
The Futility of Flesh-Driven Goodness
“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing…”
— Romans 7:18 (KJV)
Paul, once a Pharisee of the highest order, came to understand a profound truth: human effort cannot produce righteousness.
This is why Jesus said:
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
— Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
Righteousness is not achieved. It is received.
And it comes by grace, through faith, in the finished work of Christ.
A New Creature in Christ
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
When you are born again, God doesn’t patch up your old life.
He makes you completely new.
Your spirit is regenerated and seated with Christ (Ephesians 2:6).
Your mind begins to renew through His Word (Romans 12:2).
And your body becomes a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
This is the transformation that allows you to live a life that is truly good—not by human standards, but by divine design.
The Way to Be Born Again
So how does this new life begin?
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
— Romans 10:9 (KJV)
This is the gateway to eternity—
Not religion. Not works.
Faith in Jesus Christ alone.
If you believe that He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead, and if you confess Him as Lord, you will be saved.
“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
— Romans 10:10 (KJV)
This is not just about being good in this life.
It’s about being redeemed for eternity.
A Call to Repentance and New Life
Right now, many are trying to find peace through performance—doing more, giving more, striving harder.
But the truth is, you must surrender.
Turn from your sin. Trust in Jesus. Receive the new birth.
“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:5 (KJV)
This is your invitation—not to just be good, but to be born again.
The Gospel Message
Here is the simple truth:
-
You are a sinner.
> “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) -
Your sin earns death.
> “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) -
Jesus died and rose for you.
> “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) -
You must believe and confess.
> “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
Don’t settle for being “good.” Be made new.
Be born again. Today.
