From Orphan to Heir: Finding Freedom in Romans 8

Have you ever felt like your flesh is constantly winning? Like no matter how hard you try, you fall back into old habits, thoughts, or guilt? You're not alone. But God's Word offers freedom, not condemnation.

Romans 8 is a declaration of spiritual victory for those who are in Christ Jesus. Let's dive in.

"So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God." (Romans 8:8, KJV)

When we walk in the flesh, we are out of step with God. But when the Spirit of Christ empowers us, we are no longer dominated by sinful desires. Our identity changes. We are no longer orphans. We are children of the Most High.

"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9, KJV)

"And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness." (Romans 8:10, KJV)

"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you." (Romans 8:11, KJV)

These verses reveal a supernatural truth: the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is alive in us. We are not merely improved versions of our old selves. We are new creations.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV)

Religion vs. Relationship

Many of us have been taught that if we just do more, we will be better Christians. Pray more. Read more. Serve more. But the gospel is not about self-improvement through performance. It is about receiving what Christ has done and allowing Him to live through us.

"It is finished." (John 19:30, KJV)

When Jesus said those words, He wasn’t just ending His suffering. He was declaring the end of sin’s power over those who believe. He paid the price. And then He sent the Holy Spirit to indwell His people.

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you." (John 16:7, KJV)

Jesus said we would do greater works, not because we are better than Him, but because He lives in us through the Holy Spirit.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." (John 14:12, KJV)

We are not striving to become children of God. We are His children, and as His children, we allow Christ to be glorified in us.

"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." (Romans 8:16, KJV)

Call to Repentance

If you're tired of losing to your flesh, the solution is not to try harder. It is to surrender deeper. Get before God. Ask Him to fill you afresh with His Spirit. Receive His love and embrace your identity as His child.

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." (James 4:8, KJV)

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, KJV)

The Gospel Message

All have sinned.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23, KJV)

Sin brings death.

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23, KJV)

Jesus paid the price.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8, KJV)

Confess and believe.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9, KJV)

Conclusion

Your victory over the flesh will never come from your own strength. It comes from abiding in Christ, receiving His Spirit, and walking as a child of God. Romans 8 is your declaration of freedom. Believe it. Receive it. Live it.

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1, KJV)
