Keep Your Eye on the Why: Living Free in a World Bound by Debt and Appearances

We live in a culture consumed by comparison, constantly chasing the next best thing, the next purchase, the next momentary thrill. The world subtly whispers that success is defined by luxury, image, and accumulation. But what if the way of Christ calls us to something deeper, truer, and freer?

Jesus prayed for His followers in John 17:16, saying,

“They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
We are in the world, yes, but not of it. This distinction is crucial for the believer who seeks to live in alignment with God’s Kingdom rather than the systems of man.

The Trap of the “Joneses”

I live in a neighborhood where people drive luxury vehicles and flaunt their latest acquisitions. It’s tempting to think, “Maybe I should upgrade too.” But pause for a moment. Is that truly your why?

When we let someone else's life dictate our decisions, we lose sight of our calling. We begin chasing their dreams, not ours. Worse, we may fall into bondage, enslaved by debt, time, or image. As Proverbs 22:7 solemnly warns:

“The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

The Word of God doesn’t condemn having possessions, but it speaks clearly about being possessed by them. When our decisions are motivated by the pressure to perform or compete, we lose our identity in Christ.

Freedom Begins With Purpose

I’ve seen interviews with billionaires, athletes, entrepreneurs. You know what they all seem to agree on? That fulfillment isn’t found in material things but in purpose.

Many of them return to the same foundational question: What is your why?
And yet, millions live without ever answering it. Instead, they mimic the behavior of others, hoping it brings peace. But it doesn't.

The Lord created each of us with intention. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

When we don’t know our God-given “why,” we are easily swayed. We buy things we don’t need, to impress people who don’t care, with money we don’t have. And in the process, we drift from God’s design for our life.

A Gem for the Wise: Choose Freedom

You may hear this and think, “But I enjoy the finer things.” There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. The issue is when those things become chains.

The call is to live free. Galatians 5:1 declares:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

If buying something robs your peace, burdens your future, or shifts your focus from the eternal to the temporal, it’s no longer a blessing it’s a trap.

So I encourage you: keep your eyes on your why. A why rooted in Christ. A why that prioritizes your family, your faith, your freedom. A why that aligns with Heaven’s will, not Earth’s trends.

A Call to Repentance

Friend, if you’ve been caught in the cycle of striving, comparison, or debt, it’s not too late. God’s mercy is calling you to turn. Repentance is not about shame. It is about freedom. It is the door to a life led by purpose, not pressure.

Jesus said,

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
(Matthew 11:28, KJV)

Let go of the heavy yoke of worldly success and pick up the light burden of Christ.

The Gospel: Your Path to True Freedom

If you’ve never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, the time is now. The world offers empty promises. Only Jesus offers eternal life and true freedom.

All have sinned.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
(Romans 3:23, KJV)

Sin brings death.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23, KJV)

Jesus paid the price.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8, KJV)

Confess and believe.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
(Romans 10:9, KJV)

Conclusion

In a world that urges you to perform, conform, and consume, may you choose to live set apart. Keep your eyes on the eternal. Keep your heart in the Word. Keep your “why” rooted in the One who never changes. And above all, stay free.

You were not created to keep up. You were called to stand out.

If you’re ready to make that decision today, call upon the name of the Lord and be saved.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
(Romans 10:13, KJV)
