When the Price of Betrayal Is Cheap: What Judas Teaches Us About Ourselves
“And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.”
Matthew 26:15 (KJV)
The Shocking Cost of a Savior
We have all read the story of Judas Iscariot: one of the twelve disciples, handpicked by Jesus, who walked with Him, witnessed His miracles, and still chose to betray Him. But hidden in Matthew 26 is a deeper, often overlooked message that calls for reflection not just about Judas, but about us.
“Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.”
Matthew 26:14–15 (KJV)
Thirty pieces of silver. That was the going rate for a slave in Exodus 21:32. Judas didn’t see a Savior. He saw someone to be sold. He placed the same value on Christ as the world places on someone considered disposable.
“Then I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.”
Zechariah 11:12 (KJV)
The tragedy isn’t just that Judas betrayed Jesus, but that we do the same every time we treat the Lord like a commodity rather than the King. When we pray only for what we want, seek God only for what He can give, and walk away when He calls us to carry our cross we are no different.
Satan’s Strategy: Opportunity and Proximity
“And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.”
John 13:27 (KJV)
The devil is strategic. When he failed to tempt Jesus directly in the wilderness, Luke 4:13 tells us he departed “for a season.” He waited. Patiently. Watching for an opening.
“And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.”
Luke 4:13 (KJV)
Satan returned this time through Judas. Judas had proximity to Jesus but not intimacy with Jesus. He followed Him publicly but failed Him privately.
“Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.”
Matthew 26:48 (KJV)
The betrayal came through a kiss. A gesture of affection turned into a weapon of destruction. This is a sobering reminder: the enemy won’t always come through someone who looks evil. Sometimes it’s the people closest to us. Sometimes, it’s us.
Borrowed Convictions: The Danger of Secondhand Faith
The ones who arrested Jesus didn’t even know who He was. They relied on Judas to identify Him.
“Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.”
Matthew 26:48 (KJV)
They were after Jesus, yet never took the time to know Him. How many today rely on pastors, influencers, or friends to feed them truth, while never opening the Word for themselves? That’s borrowed conviction faith without roots.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
2 Timothy 3:5 (KJV)
A vampire Christian wants the blood of Jesus but prefers the darkness of sin. Judas had access to the Bread of Life but hungered for temporary gain. And when the moment came to choose truth or profit, he chose silver.
Betraying Christ for Free
Before we shame Judas for selling Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, let us ask ourselves:
-
How often do we compromise for acceptance?
-
How often do we stay silent to avoid offense?
-
How often do we trade truth for comfort, or purity for pleasure?
“Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24 (KJV)
Many betray Him daily not for coins, but for convenience.
A Call to Repentance: Trade Silver for Surrender
If you’ve realized you’ve been walking like Judas near to Jesus but far in heart there is hope. Judas chose suicide, but you can choose salvation. Peter failed too. He denied Christ, but he repented, wept bitterly, and was restored (Luke 22:62, John 21:15–17).
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”
Acts 3:19 (KJV)
Don’t let your betrayal define you. Let God’s mercy redeem you.
The Gospel: Your Way Back to God
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion: Don’t Sell What Was Paid for in Blood
Judas thought he was gaining silver. But he lost eternity.
He tried to return the money. But it was too late.
“And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.”
Matthew 27:5 (KJV)
What are you clinging to that’s costing you Jesus? Let it go. Come to Christ. Trade silver for surrender. Trade betrayal for belief.
You don’t have to end like Judas. You can rise like Peter.
Choose repentance. Choose truth. Choose Jesus.
