The Purpose of Life
In every generation, people ask the same question.
What is my purpose?
Is it found in a career?
In success?
In relationships?
In fulfillment?
Scripture gives a clear and direct answer.
Purpose is not something you create.
It is something you receive.
I. The Will of God: Salvation First
The foundation of purpose begins with God’s will.
“And this is the will of him that sent me… that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life.” John 6:40 (KJV)
Before purpose is about doing, it is about believing.
Before mission, there is salvation.
The first and greatest purpose of every person is to:
• See Christ
• Believe in Him
• Receive eternal life
Without this, every other pursuit lacks eternal meaning.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36 (KJV)
II. Purpose Is Rooted in Relationship, Not Role
Modern culture teaches that purpose is tied to identity through work.
What you do defines who you are.
But Scripture reverses this.
Identity is found in Christ.
Purpose flows from that identity.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
This means your purpose does not change based on your job.
Whether you are:
• A barber
• A student
• A business owner
• A parent
The core purpose remains the same.
III. The Great Commission: The Assignment for Every Believer
Jesus gave a universal calling.
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…” Matthew 28:19 (KJV)
This is not reserved for a select few.
It is the assignment of every believer.
To share the Gospel.
To point others to Christ.
To be a witness.
“But ye shall receive power… and ye shall be witnesses unto me.” Acts 1:8 (KJV)
This is the mission.
Not forced.
Not manipulated.
But faithfully carried.
IV. The Role of the Messenger
Believers are not responsible for outcomes.
They are responsible for obedience.
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV)
This removes pressure.
You are not called to:
• Convince everyone
• Change hearts
• Control responses
You are called to:
• Share truth
• Plant seeds
• Reflect Christ
God handles the rest.
V. Growth Through the Word
To fulfill this purpose, one must grow in understanding.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
The more you know Christ, the more naturally you share Him.
This is not about performance.
It is about transformation.
As the Word shapes you, your life becomes a testimony.
VI. Modern Confusion: Searching Without Direction
Today, many feel lost.
They chase purpose through:
• Careers
• Achievements
• Experiences
Yet the emptiness remains.
Why?
Because purpose is being sought apart from God.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
Purpose is not discovered through self-focus.
It is revealed through surrender.
VII. Daily Opportunities: Purpose in the Ordinary
Purpose is not limited to grand moments.
It exists in daily interactions.
A conversation.
An act of kindness.
A word of truth.
God places people in your path intentionally.
“For we are labourers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9 (KJV)
Every environment becomes an opportunity.
Not by striving.
But by being available.
A Call to Repentance
If life feels purposeless, the issue may not be direction.
It may be disconnection from God.
Return to Him.
Realign with His will.
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
Purpose follows pursuit of God.
The Gospel Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin brings death.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus paid the price.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Confess and believe.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
Purpose is not something you chase.
It is something you live.
To know Christ.
To follow Him.
To make Him known.
Everything else is secondary.
The world will tell you to find yourself.
God calls you to lose yourself in Him.
For in Christ, purpose is not uncertain.
It is clear, eternal, and unchanging.
