Christianity Is Not a Religion. It Is a Relationship with Christ.
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3 (KJV)
Many people reject Christianity without ever hearing the true Gospel.
Why?
Because they think Christianity is simply another religion.
They picture:
Rules.
Rituals.
Denominations.
Performance.
Trying to earn God's approval.
But when we open the Scriptures, we find something radically different.
The Gospel is not about climbing our way to God.
It is about God coming down to us through Jesus Christ.
I. Religion Says, "Earn It." The Gospel Says, "Receive It."
Every man-made religion centers on what humanity must do.
The Gospel centers on what Christ has already done.
Jesus declared from the cross:
“It is finished.” John 19:30 (KJV)
Our salvation is not built upon our performance.
It rests upon Christ's finished work.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith... not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
No one earns salvation.
It is received by grace through faith.
II. Jesus Confronted Empty Religion
Scripture rightly points to Jesus' rebuke of the religious leaders.
In Luke 11, Jesus condemned those who burdened people with endless religious requirements.
“Ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne.” Luke 11:46 (KJV)
The Pharisees emphasized external rule-keeping while neglecting justice, mercy, and love for God.
Jesus opposed hypocrisy, not obedience itself.
III. Obedience Matters but It Follows Relationship
Scripture says obedience is the fruit of a relationship, not the way we earn one.
Jesus said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15 (KJV)
Notice the order.
Jesus did not say:
"Keep My commandments so that I will love you."
He said:
"If you love Me..."
Obedience flows from love.
Likewise, the apostle John writes:
“We love him, because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 (KJV)
God's love comes first.
Our response follows.
IV. The Pharisees Knew Scripture but Missed the Savior
Jesus told the religious leaders:
“Search the scriptures... and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39 (KJV)
The Pharisees possessed remarkable biblical knowledge.
Yet they failed to recognize the One to whom the Scriptures pointed.
Knowledge alone is not saving faith.
A person can know many Bible verses without personally trusting Christ.
V. Relationship Is the Heart of Eternal Life
Jesus defines eternal life Himself:
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee...” John 17:3 (KJV)
Notice Jesus does not define eternal life merely as endless existence.
It is knowing God through Christ.
Biblically, "know" speaks of personal relationship, fellowship, and communion.
Christianity is not simply believing facts about Jesus.
It is trusting Him and walking with Him.
VI. Christ Removed the Barrier
When Jesus died,
“The veil of the temple was rent in twain.” Matthew 27:51 (KJV)
The torn veil symbolized open access to God through Christ.
Believers no longer approach God through earthly priests or temple sacrifices.
Jesus Himself is our Great High Priest.
“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)
VII. Obedience Is Empowered by Grace
Some misunderstand grace as permission to live however we please.
Scripture rejects that idea.
Paul asked:
“Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.” Romans 6:1-2 (KJV)
Grace does not remove the call to holiness.
Grace empowers holiness.
The Holy Spirit transforms believers from the inside out.
Obedience becomes the fruit of a changed heart rather than an attempt to earn acceptance.
VIII. Religion Changes Behavior. Christ Changes Hearts.
External religion often focuses on appearances.
Jesus transforms the inner person.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Christianity is not merely self-improvement.
It is new life through Christ.
A Call to Repentance
If you have viewed Christianity as nothing more than rules, rituals, or trying to become good enough, hear the invitation of Jesus:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
You do not come because you have already cleaned yourself up.
You come because only Christ can cleanse you.
Repent, believe the Gospel, and trust Him completely.
The Gospel Invitation
All have sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Sin deserves judgment.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (KJV)
Jesus died in our place.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Believe and be saved.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9 (KJV)
Conclusion
Christianity is not fundamentally about rules.
Nor is it about earning God's favor.
It is about a relationship with the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
His grace saves.
His Spirit transforms.
His love motivates obedience.
When you truly know Him, obedience is no longer merely a duty.
It becomes the joyful response of a heart that has been redeemed by the Savior who loved us first.
