Lord, direct my path

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."
Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

Few things are more frustrating than having our carefully planned day interrupted.

A delayed appointment.

An unexpected conversation.

A canceled meeting.

A detour we never anticipated.

Our natural reaction is often irritation because our plans have been disrupted.

Yet Proverbs reminds us that while we make plans, God directs our steps.

Sometimes His direction comes disguised as an interruption.


Planning Is Good But God Is Sovereign

The Bible never condemns planning.

Wise stewardship often requires preparation, diligence, and thoughtful decision-making.

Proverbs 16:9 acknowledges this reality:

"A man's heart deviseth his way..."

God has given us minds to think, organize, and prepare.

However, the verse doesn't end there.

"...but the LORD directeth his steps."

Our plans are limited by what we can see.

God's plans are perfect because He sees the beginning and the end.


Divine Appointments Often Feel Inconvenient

Many of life's greatest testimonies begin with phrases like:

  • "That wasn't in my plans."
  • "I wasn't supposed to be there."
  • "My whole schedule fell apart."

What initially appears to be an inconvenience may actually be God's providence at work.

A delay may protect you.

A conversation may encourage someone who desperately needed hope.

A canceled appointment may redirect you toward something better.

The interruption may become the answer to a prayer you didn't even recognize.


God Often Worked Through Ordinary Moments

Throughout Scripture, God frequently interrupted ordinary routines to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

Moses was simply tending sheep when God called him from the burning bush (Exodus 3).

David was delivering food to his brothers when he encountered Goliath (1 Samuel 17).

The Samaritan woman was drawing water when she met the Messiah (John 4).

The disciples were fishing when Jesus called them to become fishers of men (Matthew 4:18–22).

None of these moments were scheduled.

Each interruption became a divine appointment.


Trusting God When Plans Change

Many believers sincerely pray:

"Lord, direct my path."

Yet when God begins directing it differently than expected, frustration often replaces trust.

We ask God to lead us but only if His leading fits our calendar.

True faith trusts God's guidance even when it disrupts our expectations.

Isaiah reminds us:

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD."
Isaiah 55:8 (KJV)

God's ways are always higher than ours.


Ask a Different Question

Instead of immediately asking:

"Why is this happening?"

Consider asking:

"Lord, are You directing me through this?"

That simple shift changes our perspective.

What appeared to be a setback may actually be God's setup.

What seemed like an obstacle may become an opportunity to serve, encourage, or grow.


Walking by Faith

Following Christ means trusting Him beyond our own understanding.

Sometimes obedience means continuing with the original plan.

Other times, it means embracing the unexpected path He places before us.

As Proverbs teaches:

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

God's direction is not always predictable, but it is always purposeful.


The Gospel

The greatest interruption in human history was God's intervention through Jesus Christ.

Humanity was lost in sin and unable to save itself.

Instead of leaving us in our brokenness, God entered history through His Son.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day.

Through faith in Him, sinners are reconciled to God and given eternal life.

What seemed like the greatest tragedy, the cross, became the greatest demonstration of God's love and the means of our salvation.


Conclusion

Life rarely unfolds exactly as we planned.

Schedules change.

Doors close.

Unexpected opportunities arise.

Rather than viewing every interruption as a problem, we can learn to ask whether God is directing our steps.

The Lord often accomplishes His greatest work in the moments we never planned.

So when your day changes unexpectedly, pause before becoming frustrated.

The interruption may not be an accident.

It may be a divine appointment prepared by the God who lovingly directs every step of those who trust Him.
